Gray Coverage vs Highlights by YUMI
05.04.2024

Hello, I am Viange Hair stylist Yumi. Today’s topic is about gray coverage coloring vs highlights. I’d like to discuss the advantages and areas of caution for both options. I hope this will be helpful when you consider which may be best for you.
First, the good thing about gray coverage coloring is that, as the name suggests, it can effectively cover gray hair. However, the lighter the shade, the weaker its ability to dye the gray hair. If you dye your hair black, the regrowth of the gray hairs will become noticeable as it grows out. I like to mix in a slightly lighter color, adding a hint of brown. Regardless, since hair grows, I usually recommend touching up the roots every 6-8 weeks.
As for highlights, the good thing is that the colors used are generally lighter, making gray hair less noticeable. Additionally, even as your roots grow out, the contrast between the colored and natural hair is minimized, so you can go longer between touch-ups, sometimes up to 3-6 months. Furthermore, depending on the design, highlights can help camouflage gray hair. However, since highlights do not dye gray hair at all, and often bleach is used, the hair is susceptible to becoming dry.
When it comes to gray coverage vs highlights, what can or cannot be done may vary depending on the condition of your hair. I hope to assist you in achieving beautiful color that is gentle on your strands.
