Many of you may be unaware that an increase in gray hairs can be caused by UV damage from the sun. It can increase hair loss as well. It is said that the effects of the damage caused by UV rays appear 2 to 3 months post-exposure. There are instances where people go to the beach in the summer and begin to see more gray hairs around the fall. It’s common practice to apply sunscreen to the face, but it’s also important to protect the scalp along with the rest of your skin. Wearing a hat is the best method, and I’m sure many of you would not feel comfortable applying creams and lotions to your scalp. There are sun-protection products available in the form of sprays, and I recommend having them on hand.
It is also beneficial to up your Vitamin C intake, preferably in the evening, and avoid taking them in the morning. The effects of sun damage to the hair are similar to when your skin becomes parched from a sunburn. Your hair cuticles also become dry and open up. If left untreated, the hair can lose its internal proteins. Therefore, it’s important to help restore your cuticles and care for them by applying hair oil or cream.
