Stylist: Yumi
Main Branch: Saratoga Salon
Q: Tell us about yourself. Where are you from? What are some of your career highlights?
A: I'm originally from Saga Prefecture, Japan and started my hair styling career at a an early age. I had the opportunity to go to Beauty School when I was 18 and got my professional license when I was 20 to work for a hair salon. Starting out as an assistant, days and months passed of getting scolded by seniors and staying late nights to hone my craft. You won't believe how many times I thought of quitting my job from all the stress! (LOL)
But during my 6 years there, I had the most precious encounters in my life. I'm especially grateful that I met one of the senior stylists who looked after me. She took the time to teach me everything from technique to customer service. She would always let me help out with every single one of her customers so I can learn. Whenever we had a bridal project, she would let me go with her to the wedding, which is where I learned bridal makeup and up-dos. When the time came for me to start handling customers on my own, everything she taught me clicked. Even to this day, I'm always reminded of her words and think about the importance of remembering my roots. It's the foundation of everything.
I was a bit nervous about coming to the U.S. at first, but fortunately, I found out about Viange Hair and I'm grateful that I'm able to work as a hair stylist even in a different country. I currently work as a General Manager at the Saratoga salon and was recently promoted to Designer this March. I hope to continue to enjoy my growth as a hair stylist.
Q: What's your specialty?
A: Haircuts that bring out the best in my customer. I create haircuts in a way so my customers can easily style at home. Short haircuts, bridal makeup and up-dos are also my forte.
Q: Why did you become a stylist?
A: I've always loved playing with my friends' hair when I was a kid. I knew hair styling was a perfect job for me ever since I decided to enroll in Beauty School back in high school.
Q: What do you love about your job?
A: The fact that I was able to meet so many different customers. The fact that those customers all went home happy with their new hair. I love being able to bring out the true beauty within my customers and to be able to take part in their life events.
Q: Tell us about your aspirations.
A: To become the number one hair stylist in California!
Q: Who's your muse and why?
A: All of the senior stylists who looked after me during my starting years. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be standing here as a hair stylist. I still look up to them and can't thank them enough.
Q: What do you do on your free time?
A: I go shopping, get massages and relax in hot springs. I've recently started going to the gym as well.
Q: What’s your favorite quote?
A: There's a Japanese saying called "Ichigo Ichie", which means an encounter that only happens once in a lifetime. Treasure every moment because that moment will never recur.
