Are you doing UV care?
Ultraviolet rays are categorized into three types based on their wavelength: UVA, UVB, and UVC.
Due to the difference in wavelengths, UVA and UVB affect the skin differently regarding depth and effects.
UVA:
- Long wavelength. It penetrates deep into the skin (the dermis).
- It increases melanin, causing the skin to darken (tanning).
- It is a cause of dark spots and freckles.
- It leads to wrinkles and sagging due to destroying collagen in the dermis.
- UVA radiation still reaches you even on cloudy days or through window glass.
UVB:
- Short wavelength. It affects the shallow layers of the skin.
- It causes inflammation on the surface of the skin, resulting in redness and swelling (sunburn).
- It leads to the formation of spots and freckles due to activating melanocytes.
- UVB radiation decreases on cloudy days or when filtered through window glass.
The Impact of UV Rays on the Scalp
It is not widely known, but the primary cause of scalp aging is UV-induced aging!!
The scalp is exposed to nearly twice the amount of UV radiation as the face.
When the scalp is exposed to UV rays, it accelerates aging, leading to symptoms such as thinning hair, gray hair, and hair loss.
Furthermore, UV radiation hardens the scalp and worsens blood circulation, causing new hair to become thin and brittle and more prone to damage.
Problems Caused by UV Radiation
- Thinning Hair, Hair Loss
Exposure to UV rays causes dryness and inflammation of the scalp and negatively impacts the hair roots. As a result, healthy hair may stop growing, leading to thin, weak, and fragile hair, which can eventually cause hair loss and thinning.
- Deterioration of Hair
Hair is mainly composed of a protein called keratin, formed by amino acid bonds. UV radiation oxidizes hair, damaging the keratin, leading to hair damage, dryness, and loss of luster.
- Hair Color Fading
When UV rays hit wet hair (caused by sweat), they cause oxidation within the hair, leading to damage. This process breaks down the pigments in the hair, resulting in color fading and brassy looking.
