Vol.18 Tailored Hair by Aki – Haircut : The Bob Edition (Anatomy of a Bob)
08.02.2023

We will be going over how to design a bob.
Following the medium/ layered styles we previously discussed, the bob is a popular style. The bob is the number one style that can address many of the concerns a client may have. Because this particular style has a dramatic effect if it is not executed properly it can diminish the features you were intending to highlight. It requires keen attention to detail. Face shape, posture, height, and style of clothing are some of the things that will factor into forming the silhouette. The slightest change in one degree of an angle or a millimeter in length can make or break your design. That is why we believe the most important skill is to be able to find and discern the point that addresses all these factors.
As mentioned before, utilize the mirror to work with the client’s hair and manipulate it to find the best silhouette. When you are doing this pay close attention, not only to the shape of their face, but to their facial expressions as well. There will be certain points when you see their faces light up or a moment when they are clearly happy with what they see. You must burn the image of the length and silhouette you created in those moments into your mind.
Most bobs are created according to a client’s face shape and bone structure. However, an often overlooked and important component is the length and thickness of their neck, their posture, the width of their shoulders, and the shape of their shoulders. Remind them to arrive wearing clothing with a simple neckline so you can properly see the lines of their neck and shoulders to make a proper assessment, and create a style that best suits them.
Up next, we will finally get into cutting techniques.
