Digital Perm: A method in which electrical power is harnessed to change the shape of the hair.
Digital perms require a different system compared to the conventional “cold” perm. It is also known as a “hot” perm, and we will go over the techniques it requires and its effects on the hair.
Previously, we discussed how a conventional cold perm uses a gentle alkaline agent to soften the hair, followed by a hardening agent to set the shape of the hair. However, the digital perm uses electrical force to change the shape of the hair by acting on the proteins inside the hair.
The characteristics of digital perms are that they are less damaging to the hair than regular perms and are simple to style. This makes it easy to achieve luscious curls and deep waves. However, selecting the appropriate digital perm is important based on hair quality and condition.
Digital perms are expected to reduce styling time because they keep their shape well for a long period of time, but they require proper care. Be sure to take note of any instructions or homecare advice provided by your stylist.
To understand the heat-induced shape change of proteins in digital perms, let us follow the example of eggs and meat, which are made of the same protein as hair. Proteins in eggs and meat can coagulate or denature and change shape with heat. Similarly, in digital perms, heat is applied to the protein, which changes the shape of the hair and creates the curl. However, excessive heat can damage hair proteins, so proper temperature control is necessary. Also, just like eggs and meat, the aftercare and handling of digital perms is important. With proper aftercare, beautiful perms can be made to last longer. Tailored Hair considers it ideal to finish these “eggs” in a “par cooked” state. Digital perms can create a gorgeous style with the right selection and proper care.
As a hairdresser, I pay attention to the following points when offering digital perms:
- Selecting the appropriate type of digital perm based on a thorough understanding of the hair quality and condition.
- Using appropriate temperature control to minimize damage to the hair.
- Provide customers with advice on appropriate hair care at home.
- Focus on aftercare instructions to help maintain and prolong the effects of the perm. Digital perms can create beautiful hairstyles with this incredible method and proper care.
