Vol.33 Tailored Hair by Aki : Men’s perm
02.29.2024

A fail-proof perm for those who have stubborn straight hair. But what constitutes a failed perm?
There are two major reasons:
1. Over-processing
2. Under-processing, where it doesn’t take and the curls come undone right away.
People with stubbornly straight hair often desire to have a loose, naturally tousled style perm. It’s easy to achieve this look for women with long hair by applying a digital perm. However, a digital perm is not ideal for the short hair on men. If you use a large rod, you risk the hair not taking to the curl at all, or it comes easily undone. On the other hand, if you were to process the hair with small rods you risk ending up with tight curls that can look matronly.
I’m sure there are many who have experienced this. The answer is right in between. Using small rods and wrapping the hair around them firmly, but not too tightly—about two turns—and leaving about a 3:1 ratio of straight sections, you can achieve the desired loose, wavy look.
This is how it will look with the rods removed.
The straight hairs and curled hairs will clash with each other. However, you can leverage these characteristics to bring out further volume. The sections that were wrapped around the rods are properly processed and will keep their shape for a long time.
When dry, the hair looks like this and you can mould and control the volume and movement with some hair wax.
I hope you give this fail-proof perming method a try.
