How to share your desired design
The most crucial step in creating hair is communicating and sharing the desired outcome. We don’t want to impose a design solely created by the hair designer, also we should not leave it solely to the client to come up with their design as well. It is important to collaborate with the client to come to the best creation.
As professionals, we are able to visualize the outcome but it is important that the client is able to understand it as well. We do not use hair catalogs. As mentioned before, we encourage the client to bring as many reference materials as they want to convey their desired hair design. Discussing the reference photos, observing where the client focuses on when gazing in the mirror, or how they touch their hair helps with researching their desired outcome. Next we’ll discuss their lifestyle, how they wear their hair day to day, and how much time they spend on caring and styling their hair. We also inquire about the types of shampoos, or styling products used at home. We’ll go over some recent hair history like when was your last haircut, how often you maintain your style, and the current condition of your hair.
With all this information we’ll come up with at least three styles that would best suit the client. If we can not come up with three, we’ll continue to dig a little deeper to get a better vision.
The criteria for the three different styles are:
- A style with the most dramatic change.
- A style that is a slight deviation from the current style.
- A style that can be maintained without changing the current style.
Whether you are a first time client or a regular, one can feel anxious when it comes to change. The initial consultation is an important time for both parties to ease any worries or concerns. By offering a wide range of options whether it be for a drastic change or maintaining a current look, we encourage an open conversation with each person. Showing these drastic and subtle changes is actually done in front of the mirror with the client’s hair to best mimic their reference photos. This process is very important, as even subtle changes can make a surprising difference in how the facial structure is accentuated, and even how facial expressions can change. This is when we discover what helps you shine the most.
Next time we’ll share exactly how we go through this technique.
