Hair 101: 5 basic hair questions answered
Today, we're going to be answering fundamental questions about the mechanism of hair as well as some questions we get asked from our customers at our salon. Let's get started!
1. How long does hair grow in a month?
Although it varies, an average person's hair grows about a quarter of an inch to half an inch in a month.
2. What is hair made up of?
80-90%: A protein called keratin
10-15%: Water
3%: Melanin, lipids, and other smaller elements
3. How much hair is lost in a day?
You lose about 50 to 100 hair strands a day. Seems like a lot of hair? No need to freak out. This is part of a normal hair cycle and is a necessary process for hair to renew itself.
4. I used to have straighter hair when I was younger...Why is it becoming frizzy and unruly now?
The shape of your follicles is a major determinant of hair texture. If you have straight hair, that means you have a perfectly round follicle that allows hair to grow straight up from your roots. If your hair is frizzy or curly, your follicles are oval shaped, allowing your hair to grow at a curved angle. Some people will naturally have this oval shape, but for people who used to have straight hair, the shape of your follicles have transformed its shape due to the skin losing its elasticity over time.
5. Why do I get white or grey hair?
As we age, our hair follicles cease to produce melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. This is why our hair loses its natural color as we age. Your hair only looks white or grey because of the light refraction, but it's really transparent.
