Want Healthy Natural Hair? 8 Dos and Don’ts.
Keep these 8 tips in mind to maintain healthier hair.
- Watch out for handbag straps.
- Skip the pony(tails.)
- Choose the right hair tie.
- Know the ideal temperature setting for hair irons.
- Dry your hair with a rough towel.
- Brush bottom up.
- Stay protected from the Sun!
- Twist and twirl your hair.
1. Watch out for handbag straps.
DO! Your handbag can have a big impact and even cause some damage to your hair. Long hair can easily be trapped under the straps on a handbag and result in badly breaking them.
2. Skip the pony(tails.)
DO! Mini buns called top knots and ponytails pulling might be hurting your hair. Instead, try using dry shampoo to give your hair some volume.
3. Choose the right hair tie.
DO! Skip using a hair tie with a metal connector that could catch some of your hair and cause them to pull out.(also, ouch!) Also, avoid rubber material hair ties that definitely pull your hair out too. Instead, choose fabric base material hair ties that are gentle to hair.
4. Know the right heat setting for your hair.
DO! Be sure to ask your hairstylist what temperature to set your hair straighter at. High temperature can dry out your hair and low temperature could damage your hair because you have to apply the iron more than necessary.
5. Dry your hair with a rough towel.
DON’T! Many people make the mistake of towel-drying their hair after a shower. Industry professionals recommend replacing rough towels with softer material such as an old t-shirt that absorbs moisture quicker.
6. Brush bottom up.
DON’T! No matter how gentle or careful you are, brushing can always cause hair damage. To detangle, be sure to use a detangler brush to prevent the hair from breaking. Philip Kingsley, a hair scholar, and scalp expert emphasize how important it is to start from the end then work your way up towards the root.
7. Stay protected from the Sun.
DO! Hair scientist, Philip Kingsley says the sun can cause split ends and damage your hair the same way it damages your skin. So be sure to use sunblock made specifically for hair or wear a hat to protect your head from the sun.
8. Twist and twirl your hair.
DON’T! Do you have a baaaaad habit of touching and twirling with your hair? Playing with hair is doing more harm more than you can imagine. This is not an easy habit to break, so ask your friend to stop you when you’re touching your hair.
