After getting your hair colored at a salon, do you shampoo your hair normally the same night? Although your hair looks beautifully dyed immediately after coloring, the pigment is only on the surface of your hair. It takes about 48 hours after coloring for the pigment to set. You should avoid shampooing for 24 hours after coloring to help to set the pigment and allow the color time to get deep inside your hair.
After 24 hours, use a shampoo with a color care formula for a few days.
During the first few days after coloring, your hair will absorb the colorant and become swollen. If you wash your hair with normal shampoo, the pigment will run out from cuticles, and the beautiful color will be lost. Therefore, it is recommended to use a mildly acidic color care shampoo for a few days to tighten the hair and prevent any dye loss.
Don't soak your hair or let it stay wet.
Color treatment is often associated with hair damage, so many might think soaking your hair will help. However, if your hair is left wet for an extended period of time, the cuticles will swell with moisture. If you are too eager to apply a treatment because your hair looks damaged from coloring, it will actually have the opposite effect. If you soak your hair with treatment in the bathtub for a long time, the cuticles will open up and cause your hair to fade. For the first few days after dyeing, try to minimize the amount of time your hair is wet by lightly shampooing and treating your hair and then drying it thoroughly as soon as possible.
Be careful not to overdry.
Leaving your hair wet is not good, but overdrying is also a cause of damage and fading as the cuticles are stripped away. Heat expands hair, so minimize the amount of time spent using a hair dryer and towel dry your hair thoroughly, drying it from the root. Also, avoid rubbing your hair as much as possible to avoid causing unnecessary damage. Dry your hair by patting it with a clean, dry towel so it prevents messy bed hair.
