Japanese Hair Stylists vs. Others: The Unique Training Process
09.04.2025
Hello, this is SHIN, author of the VIANGE HAIR Blog.
Today, I’d like to talk about the unique training process for hairstylists in Japan.
In Japan, after passing the national exam and obtaining a license, aspiring hairstylists begin their journey with shampoo training. From there, they gradually move on to learning color, perm, and finally haircut techniques. Each salon has its own structured curriculum, and senior stylists act as instructors and examiners, providing training and evaluations along the way.
Back in my time, it took about three years to master all the basic skills. After completing the basics, trainees invite models to the salon for practical exams. These tests cover a wide range of hair types, lengths, colors, and styles including strict time limits. Even if the final look is perfect, exceeding the time limit means failing the test. Only those who pass these rigorous exams can finally debut as a professional stylist.
Unlike in the U.S., it’s common in Japan for trainees to work as assistants for senior stylists until they are ready to debut. Because of this long and thorough training period, many Japanese stylists are highly skilled and versatile, capable of delivering exceptional results in cutting, coloring, perming, and beyond.
At VIANGE, all of our stylists have extensive training and experience in Japan. We are committed to meeting every client’s needs and making them feel happy and beautiful. We look forward to welcoming you to our salon!
Warm regards,
SHIN
